We at Xyntax are proud to have a diverse team of skilled financial experts on our staff. Today we caught up with Mercedes Marleau, Director of Finance & Management Services, for a quick interview.
Q When did you start working at Xyntax, and what made you want to work here?
A I started working at Xyntax in March of 2022. I decided to make the move from my previous job at KPMG LLP because the ability to use my CPA experience and knowledge to help First Nation Organizations and Governments was something that excited me. The ability to step into an organization for a short period of time and leave them in a better position makes the work rewarding and exciting to me.
Q What are your main duties and responsibilities at Xyntax?
A I am the Director of Finance & Management Services (FMS), spearheading this service line for our Xyntax team. We provide financial and management services to First Nation Governments and Organizations, whether that be filling in as Interim CFO, aiding in audit preparation, or helping to create efficiencies. Whatever an organization needs assistance with, we are there to help.
Q Where have you lived, and where is your favourite place to live?
A I grew up in Smithers BC, moving to the Okanagan in 2011, and it has been my favourite place to live. I love the warmer weather, and living in wine country doesn’t hurt!
Q Where have you travelled to, and where is your favourite place to visit?
A The fall before COVID I went on a month-long trip to Ireland and Spain, it was incredible. I would go back in a heartbeat. We spent time touring the Ring of Kerry, did a cooking class in Valencia and just spent time enjoying the different cultures through trying all the foods and site seeing!
Q What do you like to do in your personal time?
A In my spare time you can find me either out biking or paddle boarding with my fiancé or planning our upcoming wedding! You will also find me hanging out with my French Bulldog, Gary.
Q What causes are you passionate about?
A I spent a few years on the Board for Gennext Okanagan, an organization that raises money for youth initiative grants. More recently I have been participating in different races to raise money for various causes.
Q What is an interesting but little known fact about yourself?
A Two interesting facts (well I think so):
1. I have a Graduate’s Certificate in Accounting with Digital Analytics
2. I have been making all of the décor/favours for our wedding and have loved it, inspiring me to start my own online store creating and selling wedding items to others!
Q Who/what was your inspiration for your career path?
A I actually went to university for psychology, quickly realizing that it was not the path for me. Taking some business courses, I decided to try accounting and enjoyed it. After getting my Bachelor of Management at the University of British Columbia Okanagan, I got my CPA while working at KPMG here in Kelowna. My inspiration was and still is just my desire to be my best self and to never stop learning.
